Volata Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 27, 2026 (added a coach you choose to link as a recipient of the consumer health data you opt in to share, and the words you type in messages to your coach. Previously effective September 7, 2026; originally August 3, 2026.)
This policy applies to "consumer health data" as defined by the Washington My Health My Data Act, Nevada SB 370, and similar state consumer health data laws, and supplements the Volata Privacy Policy. It is provided by Appnika Inc ("we," "us").
Categories of consumer health data we collect
- Fitness and exercise data: training plans, workouts, runs, walks, and rides you record or log, pace, distance, duration, perceived effort, and any note you add to an activity (up to 4,000 characters).
- Precise location data collected while you record an activity (which could indicate your exercise habits and routes). Before you start, while the Record screen is open outdoors, the app also checks your GPS signal so it can tell you when you're ready; during that check it reads only how accurate the fix is and immediately discards the coordinates — nothing is stored or sent.
- Heart-rate and workout data from Apple Health, if you choose to connect it.
- Physical characteristics you choose to provide: height, weight, and any injury history you choose to tell us about.
- What you tell us on the "Check in" and "Pain or injury?" screens: that something hurts and which of the fixed options you picked (it changed your stride, it got worse while running, it's severe, it hurts at rest, you have trouble bearing weight), that you are feeling unwell or unusually tired, how a workout felt, an injury report marked minor or moderate, and what you chose to do next. Two of those screens have an optional note you can type into, so anything you write there is collected too.
- The "Check in" screen also asks about urgent warning signs — chest pain or pressure; fainting or near-fainting; severe or unusual shortness of breath; sudden numbness, weakness, or slurred speech; and signs of heat illness. If you pick one, Volata tells you to stop and seek medical help. Your answer is sent to our server and processed to decide what to show you, but which sign you picked is deliberately never stored: our records keep only the fact that the warning screen was shown, with no symptom content.
- A one-time confirmation that you're able to run and don't have a known reason — from a doctor or other professional — not to exercise. We store the fact that you confirmed it, which version of the statement you saw, and when. The record contains nothing else about your health.
- Words you type in messages to your coach, if you link one.
Why we collect it (purposes)
We collect and use consumer health data only to provide the services you request: building your training plan and suggesting changes to it — a suggested change takes effect only when you accept it — recording and displaying your activities, computing your stats and progress, and providing coaching guidance. We also use it to keep the service secure and functioning.
Sources
You (your profile entries, your in-app recordings, your manual logs) and, only if you connect it, Apple Health.
How we share it
We do not sell consumer health data. We do not share it with third parties for advertising or marketing. Apart from a coach you choose to link — described just below — there are no third parties to whom we disclose it other than the service providers listed in the Privacy Policy — the providers who host and operate Volata's infrastructure, and Anthropic — the AI text feature described there is currently turned off, so no data is sent to Anthropic while it's off, and Anthropic would receive data only if that feature is turned on in the future — each bound to process it only on our instructions to provide the service, and disclosures required by law.
A coach you choose to link. Coaching is something you switch on. If you accept a coach's invitation, that coach receives the categories of consumer health data you opt in to share with them. A coach is a person or a business you invite in. They are not part of Volata and they are not one of our service providers. Today what they receive is your workout and activity data and how hard you said a run felt; body measurements such as heart rate reach them only if you later switch that on. Each of those is shared only after an in-app consent step that names it and you have said yes. You can withdraw at any time by ending coaching in the app, and the coach loses access to your information.
Messages to your coach. Words you type to your coach in the app are shared with them, because you chose to send them. What you put in those words, including anything about your body or health, is your choice.
Your rights
You have the right to: confirm whether we collect, share, or sell consumer health data about you; access that data; withdraw consent from its collection and sharing; and have it deleted. You can delete data directly in the app: delete individual activities, or delete your whole account under Profile → Settings → Delete account. For a copy of your data, email privacy@volata.run and we will send it to you — there is no download button in the app today. You can also email us to ask us to delete your data or to withdraw your consent. We will respond within the time required by applicable law. If we deny a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision; if your appeal is denied, you may contact your state Attorney General.
Consent and withdrawal
We collect consumer health data only with your consent or as necessary to provide the service you have requested. Recording a run requires your explicit device-level location permission, which you can revoke in system settings at any time. Connecting Apple Health requires your explicit per-category Health permissions, which you can revoke in the Health app at any time. Withdrawing permission stops future collection; you can delete previously collected data as described above.
Sharing with a coach: you consent in the app when you accept a coach's invitation, and again each time the app asks before sharing more. You withdraw by ending coaching in the app.
Changes and contact
Material changes will be announced in the app before they take effect. Questions and requests: privacy@volata.run.
What changed on September 27, 2026. Coaching is new, so this page is no longer only about us and the service providers who run Volata for us. Three things were added. First, a coach you choose to link — a person or a business you invite in, who is not part of Volata — is now named as someone who receives the categories of consumer health data you opt in to share with them: today your workout and activity data and how hard you said a run felt, and body measurements such as heart rate only if you later switch that on, each after an in-app consent step that names it. We also said that the words you type in messages to your coach are shared with them, because you chose to send them. Second, those words are now listed among the categories we collect, because you can now write to a coach. Third, "Consent and withdrawal" now says how you consent to sharing with a coach — when you accept the invitation, and again each time the app asks before sharing more — and that you withdraw by ending coaching in the app. We still do not sell consumer health data and still do not share it for advertising or marketing.
What changed on September 7, 2026. We added what you tell us on the "Check in" and "Pain or injury?" screens, and any injury history you share, to the categories we collect. We corrected the sentence that said you can exercise your right of access in the app: access requests are handled by email today. Later the same day we made the list more complete: we added the urgent warning-sign questions (asked and processed, but your specific answer is never stored), the one-time ability-to-run confirmation we keep a record of, activity notes and rides, and the GPS readiness check that discards coordinates; and we removed "sex" from physical characteristics, because the app no longer asks for it.
